1. How to Install the Desktop Pattern Control Panel
The Desktop Pattern distribution diskette comes with three files and one folder — the Desktop Pattern control panel, the Patterns archive, a Read Me file and the Tutorial folder. Insert the distribution diskette and double click its icon to open the window that displays the contents of the diskette. It should look like Figure 1.1. Copy both the Desktop Pattern and the Patterns.sea files onto your startup drive by selecting both files and then dragging them onto your startup diskette. If you wish to create your own patterns, you should also copy the Tutorial folder onto your startup drive.
You need to place the Desktop Pattern control panel in the System folder in order for it to work properly. Select and drag the Desktop Pattern file onto the System folder icon and drop it in. If you are running System 7.0, a dialog box will appear that asks you if you would like this item placed in the Control Panels folder. Click the OK button. System 7.0 users may also want to create an alias of the Desktop Pattern control panel and then place this alias in the Apple Menu Items folder so that Desktop Pattern will appear in the Apple menu. This is accomplished by opening the Control Panels folder within the System Folder, selecting the Desktop Pattern control panel and then selecting ‘Make Alias’ from the Finder’s File menu. Next drag this newly created alias into the Apple Menu Items folder within the System folder. Desktop Pattern should now appear in the Apple menu.
You now need to unpack the patterns archived in the Patterns.sea file. Use the ‘New Folder’ command in the Finder’s File menu to create a new folder called Patterns on your startup drive to hold the new patterns. This folder can be created anywhere on your drive. Drag the Patterns.sea file into this folder. Open the folder and double-click the Patterns.sea file. This file is a self-extracting Compactor® archive that will unpack all the pattern files and place them in the same folder where the file itself resides. After all the pattern files have been unpacked, your folder should look like Figure 1.2. You can now throw away the Patterns.sea file.
You have now successfully completed the installation of the Desktop Pattern control panel and are ready to proceed to the next chapter, “Using Desktop Pattern.”
